About us
The MELISA Institute is the result of an academic research initiative of the same name that integrates modern clinical epidemiology methods with advanced techniques of molecular biology. MELISA is an acronym for Molecular Epidemiology for Life Sciences Accountability. MELISA Institute was founded in the city of Concepción, Chile, at the Universidad Católica de la Santísima Concepción (UCSC).
One of the main goals of the Institute is to see the human embryo as a patient. To this end, the Institute is under the umbrella of the Center of Embryonic Medicine and Maternal Health at the UCSC. The fundational goal of the MELISA Institute is to generate the technology to identify the presence of the human embryo early during pregnancy and non-invasively investigate its natural environment in order to develop embryonic therapies in utero during the first weeks of human development.
In addition, the MELISA Institute is committed to advance epidemiological research on other landmark subjects, such as maternal health, fertility, regenerative medicine with adult stem cells, and cardiovascular research.
We are located at the Center of Embryonic Medicine and Maternal Health of the Faculty of Medicine of the UCSC.
